Researchers Discover Key To Malaria Susceptibility In Children
A team of researchers from Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine have solved the mystery of why some children are more susceptible to malaria infection and anemia. These novel findings suggest that some children who are exposed to Plasmodium falciparum (P. falciparum) malaria before birth become tolerant to the malaria parasites, or their soluble products. This tolerance, which persists into childhood, reduces the ability of the immune system to attack and destroy parasites and increases the susceptibility of these children to develop a malaria infection. It also increases their risk for anemia. The study, published in this week"s issue of the open access journal, PLoS Medicine, is led by Indu Malhotra, Ph.D., and Christopher King, M.D., Ph.D., professor of international health, medicine, and pathology, with their colleagues at the Center for Global Health and Diseases at the Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine and their Kenyan colleagues at the Kenya Medical Research Institute and Division of Vector Borne Diseases.

The Anatomical Graduated Component Total Knee Replacement
This study examined the 20-year follow-up of the cemented Anatomical Graduated Component total knee replacement carried out between 1983 and 2004. The results showed that the overall survival rate at 20 years was 97.8% with revision of the tibial or femoral component as the endpoint. The survival rate at 20 years of the tibial component was 98.3% and the femoral component was 99.4%. None of the 36 implants at the 20 year follow-up had been revised for polyethylene wear or osteolysis, which may be a reflection of the use of a non-modular, compression-moulded polyethylene implant, since other studies have found polyethylene wear to be a leading cause of failure leading to revision.

New Software Experiment Seeks To Improve Care For 25 Diabetics

Twenty-five diabetic patients will be given computers that connect them to health care providers to maintain an ongoing dialogue about their condition, and allow doctors to monitor their status, in a new patient-care experiment by Microsoft and the University of Miami, the Miami Herald reports. The patients can send blood-sugar levels and other data in real time, while physicians can "nudge" patient"s who veer from appropriate care "with an e-mail." "Under the pilot program, "we"re testing the concept that, what will happen if all the patients are able to interact with doctors and nurses through a portal," a [Miami medical professor] said. "Will that lead to more prevention? More wellness? . . . It"s a very interactive process,""" the Herald reports.
