Cost-Effective Measures Could Stop Child Pneumonia Deaths
Implementing measures to improve nutrition, indoor air pollution, immunization coverage and the management of pneumonia cases could be cost-effective and significantly reduce child mortality from pneumonia, according to a study led by the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. Researchers found that these strategies combined could reduce total child mortality by 17 percent and could reduce pneumonia deaths by more than 90 percent. Pneumonia is a leading cause of death of infants in many developing countries, resulting in 2.2 million deaths each year. The study is published in the June 2009 issue of the Bulletin of the World Health Organization.

Renewed Strategic Approach Needed, Says The British Heart Foundation

In response to the inquiry report into "Was the NHS Plan really a blueprint for the NHS - 10 years on?" released by the All Party Parliamentary Group Primary Care & Public Health today. Mubeen Bhutta Policy Manager at the British Heart Foundation said: "We welcome this report which echoes the vision for the next decade of the Cardio Vascular Coalition. "We know prevention measures are the most effective way to reduce illness and prevent premature death. With rising obesity rates and an increasigly ageing population we need a heart strategy that is ready for the challenges ahead. "There has been great progress over the past ten years, but without a renewed strategic approach we run the risk of that progress slipping away." British Heart Foundation
