BBC Examines River Blindness Program In Sub-Saharan Africa
BBC examines a campaign in sub-Saharan Africa that is helping to distribute drugs to prevent onchocerciasis, also known as river blindness - a disease "caused by a parasite that is spread from human to human by the black fly, which once flourished along river beds where there is fast-flowing water." According to the BBC, "Some 35 million people are currently infected with river blindness, and about 140 million people in Africa are at risk of infection."

Researchers Discover Key To Malaria Susceptibility In Children
A team of researchers from Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine have solved the mystery of why some children are more susceptible to malaria infection and anemia. These novel findings suggest that some children who are exposed to Plasmodium falciparum (P. falciparum) malaria before birth become tolerant to the malaria parasites, or their soluble products. This tolerance, which persists into childhood, reduces the ability of the immune system to attack and destroy parasites and increases the susceptibility of these children to develop a malaria infection. It also increases their risk for anemia. The study, published in this week"s issue of the open access journal, PLoS Medicine, is led by Indu Malhotra, Ph.D., and Christopher King, M.D., Ph.D., professor of international health, medicine, and pathology, with their colleagues at the Center for Global Health and Diseases at the Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine and their Kenyan colleagues at the Kenya Medical Research Institute and Division of Vector Borne Diseases.

Shortage Of Family Physicians Troubles States, ERs
"This spring, 385 students graduated from Georgia"s medical schools, but only two of them chose to remain in the state to pursue a family medicine residency," the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports. "Overall, 20 students, or 5 percent, chose to go into family medicine - half the number that it was just five years ago." More than one-third of counties in Georgia, "many of them rural, are officially designated as primary-care health professional shortage areas," meaning there is "less than 1 doctor for 3,500 people." According to a recent study from the University of Missouri School of Medicine, "there could be a nationwide shortage of around 44,000 primary-care doctors by the year 2025, due to an aging population and fewer doctors training in primary care."

Risk Of Teenage Depression Symptoms Lowered By Family Obligation In Chinese Homes

A new study of Chinese-American youth has found that family obligation, for example caring for siblings or helping elders, plays a positive role in the mental health of Chinese-American adolescents and may prevent symptoms of depression in later teenage years. Published in the Journal of Family Psychology, the study found that 14-year-olds who reported a greater sense of family obligation reported fewer depressive symptoms by the time they reached 16. The findings suggest that family obligation may be protective against depressive symptoms. The authors suggest that a greater sense of family obligation in the early teenage years could provide teenagers with a strong family bond that makes them feel secure even when they move through adolescence and become more autonomous. The longitudinal study surveyed 218 Chinese-American teenagers over a two-year period. As participants grew older, their actions to help and support their families decreased. However, their attitude and respect toward their families remained stable, indicating that immigrant adolescents continue to endorse their traditional cultural values even when their behaviors suggest they are becoming less traditional.
