THT Hits Target For Chlamydia Testing In Barking & Dagenham, But Must Get A Quarter Of Under 25s Testing By 2010
NHS Barking and Dagenham and HIV and sexual health charity Terrence Higgins Trust (THT) have achieved a national target by encouraging over 17% of under-25s in the region to test for the sexually transmitted infection (STI) chlamydia. To tackle chlamydia in the area, more young people need to come forward for testing and continue testing on a regular basis - the target for 2009/2010 is 25%.

Many U.S. Residents Test Positive For HIV Late In Illness, Few High School Students
Many people who test positive for HIV are diagnosed late in the course of their infection when treatment might be less effective, according to a report published Thursday in CDC"s Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report, Reuters Health reports. The report looked at data on people who were diagnosed with HIV from 1996 to 2005 and found that 45 percent had developed AIDS within three years of their initial HIV diagnosis, 38.3 percent within one year and an additional 6.7 percent within the next two years (Reuters Health 6/25). R. Luke Shouse of CDC"s Division of HIV/AIDS Prevention in the National Center for HIV/AIDS, Viral Hepatitis, STD and TB Prevention, said, "This means that they may have unknowingly transmitted HIV. It also means that there is a time when they had HIV when they were not under appropriate medical care, so there are missed opportunities for prevention and care." A separate CDC report also published yesterday found that 22.3 percent of high school students who are sexually active and 12.9 percent of all students have been tested for HIV (Reinberg, HealthDay/KATC.com, 6/25).

University Of Antwerp Tests Vaccine For Mexican Flu - Vaccine Probably Available In November
In August and September, the University of Antwerp organises vaccine studies for different producers of Mexican flu (H1N1v) test vaccines. 300 to 400 volunteers will be recruited for these tests. "There is a good chance that a Mexican flu vaccine is available early November", expects vaccine expert prof. dr. Pierre van Damme, director of the Centre for the Evaluation of Vaccination (CEV), a department of the Vaccine & Infectious Disease Institute (VAXINFECTIO) at the University of Antwerp.

State News: Overrides, Cuts And Fraud

The Connecticut legislature used its override in both chambers to undo seven vetoes by the governor, including one to cover most Connecticut residents, called SustiNet, The Hartford Courant reports: "Senate Majority Leader Martin Looney said that healthcare, "in many ways, has become a cloud of worry"" over much of society. SustiNet"s nine-member board of directors will study the issue (covering people and cost) for 17 months before giving its recommendations to the legislature in January 2011" (Keating, 7/20). Los Angeles Times: "Routine teeth cleanings, optometric exams, podiatric care and some mental health visits -- all are among the services no longer paid for, as of July 1, for Californians covered by Medi-Cal." (Lunzer Kritz, 7/20). The Chattanooga Times Free Press: "According to authorities, "doctor-shopping" -- when patients visit several doctors to acquire multiple prescriptions for various drugs -- is an ever-growing problem in Tennessee. In the last year, authorities have investigated 75 doctor-shopping cases in Tennessee and six in Hamilton County, according to the office of the Tennessee Inspector General, which handles such cases involving TennCare" (South, 7/21). The Associated Press: "[Louisiana] Gov. Bobby Jindal says he hopes to work out a solution with federal officials over Louisiana"s looming $1 billion Medicaid problem stemming from post-storm damage payments following hurricanes Katrina and Rita. ò€¦ As a result of insurance payments and Road Home money, Louisiana has had a sharp increase in its per-capita income.
