Are Angiotensins Involved In The Hemodynamic Changes Of Cirrhosis Patients?
Liver cirrhosis has been recently studied in the light of the new view of the renin angiotensin system (RAS). While the angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE)-Ang 2-AT1 receptor arm contributes to liver tissue injury and fibrosis and the maintenance of basal vascular tonus in non-compensated cirrhosis, the activation of the ACE2-Ang-(1-7)-Mas receptor arm exerts anti-fibrotic actions and probably has also a role in arterial vasodilation in liver cirrhosis. In a previous study published last year in WJG by the same research group, it was shown that chronic treatment with propranolol in cirrhotic patients was characterized by marked changes in the precursors of the RAS cascade (renin and Ang 1 with repercussions on the 2 main RAS components, Ang 2 and Ang-(1-7), in the splanchnic and peripheral circulation. Therefore, the circulating profile of RAS components at different stages of liver cirrhosis and their role in hemodynamic changes of cirrhosis remained unclear.

Biogen Idec (NASDAQ: BIIB) and Elan Corporation, plc (NYSE: ELN) announced results of a study demonstrating that TYSABRI® (natalizumab) promoted regeneration and stabilization of damage done to the myelin sheath, as measured by advanced MRI technology. Damage to the myelin sheath causes the symptoms of multiple sclerosis (MS). Additional posters will also be presented during the Congress highlighting the ability of TYSABRI, in some patients, to improve physical function and patient reported outcomes on cognition, quality of life, and fatigue. TYSABRI is the first approved MS therapy with reported data suggesting that some of the signs of disease progression can be stopped. The strong efficacy profile demonstrated in clinical trials is enhanced further from these data and may help redefine success in MS.

Turner Syndrome Society Of The United States Announces Ambitious Goal To Crush Ignorance Of Turner Syndrome (TS)

The Turner Syndrome Society of the United States (TSSUS) recently concluded its 22nd Annual Conference in Portland, Oregon. The conference drew more than 350 individuals, families, researchers and health care professionals to network and learn about the latest research breakthroughs benefiting women and girls with TS. TSSUS continues to make great strides toward helping identify and assist those with TS. With that in mind the TSSUS board of directors met and unanimously agreed on setting an ambitious goal to Crush Ignorance of Turner Syndrome over the next decade. The TSSUS board also laid the groundwork for new fundraising, finance and public relations initiatives designed to professionalize the association and increase awareness of TS. One example: a board priority to "ensure that all short girls are evaluated for Turner syndrome will be advanced with a TSSUS produced brochure designed to promote this objective which will be mailed to all pediatricians in the US." "TSSUS continues to improve TS identification, outreach, and public relations efforts--now more important than ever, given economic conditions, competition for scarce res, and the current health care reform debate," said Cindy Dunnam, TSSUS executive director.
